Dolphins break the surface of the sea Day 1
Arrival in Tana at 12.15. There is a connecting flight to Fort Dauphin the following day, so we take advantage of this free afternoon and visit the fascinating city of Tana. [D]
This kite surfer gets great air! Day 2
After an early breakfast we make our way to the airport for our early flight to Fort Dauphin. Fort Dauphin, which lies on the southeast coast of Madagascar has two distinct climates which create two contrasting landscapes: the east is humid, with its wet and green tropical forests, and the south is dry with many desert plants. On arrival, we transfer straight to Vinanibe, which is 8 km from Fort Dauphin and 3 km from the airport. [B]
A deserted plam fringed beach in Madagascar Day 3-5
Days at Leisure in Vinanibe. Because of its windy climate, Vinanibe is the best site in the country for wind surfing and kite surfing. The surroundings, with the lush vegetation and big lake, make it a good place to relax after a long day of surf. Vinanibe Surf Lodge has a small botanical park and its bungalows are made by exotic tropical woods offering a comfortable setting and a beautiful beach from which to admire the sunset. The lodge is situated near a big lake which borders onto a fishing village. Many other nautical activities are offered at the club, such as wind surfing, wake boarding, skiing, surfing, body boarding, kayaking, pedalo. The ideal season for wind surfing is from August to February, and for kite surfing is from December to mid-April. Vinanibe is also the departure point for the excursion to 'L'ilot aux Portugais', a historical site of the region. [BD][BD][BD]
One of the many fish in the seas off Madagascar Day 6
Transfer to the airport to fly to Tulear, the 5th largest city of the country. It is the capital city of the south, and many tribes intermingle here despite their ethnic differences. From Tulear we drive on a gravel road for 20km until we reach Ifaty. We will cross the dry and sandy soil where the landscape will be dominated by the spiny forest. Many mangrove trees line the coast and we will see the Vezo villagers who earn their living from fishing. We will see many small pirogues - men go fishing twice a day and the children and women wait for their return on the coast to collect the fish and take it to Tulear to sale. [B]
Curious children in Madagascar Day 7-8
Ifaty lies on the north of Tulear. Situated in the largest lagoon of the country, it is an ideal place for relaxing. Many excursions are possible, such as whale watching or other sea excursions with the local boats. From July to mid September, whales come to the warm seas of Madagascar to give birth to their young. It is a spectacular experience, as we often see the whales very near to the boat. Ifaty is also protected by a large coral reef, which makes it ideal for diving and snorkelling. In the afternoon you can walk to the village of Mangily where you can experience the Vezo Fishermen's life. [B]
A whale leaps from through the waves Day 9
After an early breakfast we transfer to the airport for flight back to Tana. [B]
